Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $357,739)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Rose Brooks Center, Inc. will continue Project SAFE, a targeted school-based violence prevention program that addresses community, school, and individual risk factors that contribute to the problems of substance abuse and violence in children and youth. Through Project SAFE, Rose Brooks Center reaches children from preschool to 18 years old, promoting awareness, education, and offering support to students while they are still in school and engages them in a unique support system where they know they can be safe and discuss the issues they face everyday. They learn positive skills through interactive curricula about decision making, communication, and developing healthy relationships.
