Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $335,381)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Florida Gulf Coast University will continue providing technical assistance to law enforcement agencies through the Institute for Forensic Excellence and the Weapons and Equipment Research Institute. They will provide training, research, and evaluation of specific law enforcement technology in Southwest Florida. They offer undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal justice and forensic sciences. The Florida Gulf Coast University will also establish an off-campus test facility that will serve as a training center.
