Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $344,324)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Children's Home Society of South Dakota will continue to provide safe and stable families for victims of child abuse in Sioux Falls and Black Hills Children's Home. They will expand the Family Support program to include children discharged from Black Hills Children's Home to families in the Rapid City area. The Children's Home Society will integrate children with emotional disturbances, caused by child abuse and neglect into a family, community, and school following discharge from residential treatment. They will continue to provide therapy and organized follow-up support for families to whom children are discharged. Their overall goal is to provide a safe environment and stable families for children that have been victims of child abuse.
