Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $424,815)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The University of Tennessee's Law Enforcement Innovation Center (LEIC) will broaden the impact of two of its premier law enforcement training programs by expanding capacity through the use of technology and the internet and by utilizing graduates of the forensic program to serve as regional 'ambassadors' throughout the nation. Making the trainings available through e-learning will enable the center to address the law enforcement training need which has resulted in delays and lengthy wait lists. Both the forensic training and the leadership and command training programs will be offered by LEIC's National Forensic Science Institute, incorporating the use of technology and the internet and allowing expanded access to the proven training materials. This project will extend the reach of LEIC's outstanding training programs to meet the needs of law enforcement throughout the nation.
