Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,591,940)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Monroe County will establish the firearms forensic module in the impending Monroe County, New York Regional Crime Laboratory. The new module is designed to increase the capabilities of the new crime laboratory facility by creating a firearms analysis area that includes a firearms range, firearms reference and ammunition storage areas, a workshop, a new firearms water tank recovery system, analyst work areas and an area designed for firearms research projects. Completion of the lab is critical to the efficient operation of forensic services provided to the county and surrounding jurisdictions as it will reduce backlogs and turnaround time. A total of eight counties utilize the services of the existing crime lab.
