Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $424,815)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Monroe County, New York will expand trace evidence examination and add fingerprint forensic capabilities in the planned Monroe County Regional Crime Laboratory. Once completed, the new modules will be used to help solve major crimes of homicides, robberies, and burglaries in the county and seven surrounding jurisdictions that rely on the services of the regional lab. Because the existing regional lab does not provide fingerprint analysis, staff training in addition to the purchase of work stations, proper equipment, and ventilation for the lab and instrument rooms will be funded through the award. The project will ultimately increase the information transmitted through the statewide automated fingerprint database as well as the number of linkages made between suspects and cases.
