The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The City of Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) will enhance training sites to enable them to provide reality based training, and to provide the necessary training props and aides for the delivery of reality-based training for all KDPS sworn officers. This training will teach proper techniques and provide hands-on applications to increase the safety of both officer and citizen and to build the skill level capacity of all KDPS officers. KDPS will conduct search and rescue training, rapid intervention training, and fire and police tactics training with support from the Reality Training for Police and Fire Personnel Project. They are ensuring officer safety when responding to dangerous police and fire incidents.
