Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Tulsa Public Schools will establish a campus police department (CPD). They will increase security and provide more efficient public safety service to the students and faculty by creating a safer learning environment. CPD will provide the necessary basic equipment for a standard and comprehensive approach to creating a communication system throughout the school district and will provide interoperable communication with bus drivers, administrative staff, and other security personnel. The communication system will provide the means for dispatching calls for service to persons in need of police assistance and allow for inter-communication between officers at the scene of emergencies.
