Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $335,381)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Tulsa Public Schools will establish a Campus Police Department (CPD). The CPD will reduce the potential for physical confrontation between persons on campus that can result in criminal charges being filed as well as suspensions from school. CPD will reduce activities that relate to organized gang influence by preventing the escalation of conflict. CPD officers will provide a visible presence of armed law enforcement to provide a heightened level of security for the threat of terrorist attacks. The Tulsa Public Schools will provide the necessary basic equipment for a standard and comprehensive approach to creating a new security force.
