Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Alabama Center for Law & Civic Education (the Center) will implement Phase II of the Play by the Rules (PBR) project which provides state specific law-related education to kids. Phase II of the PBR National Project provides jurisdictions with training, technical support, legal research, 250,000 student books and 12,500 teacher guides. The Center will: develop consistent PBR marketing and public relations materials for mini-grant recipients to increase awareness and stakeholder support for the program; create a standards manual for copyright and trademark usage; and, design electronic versions of the student book and teacher guide.
