Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $134,152)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The County of St. Louis is improving the St. Louis Police Department Crime Laboratory Chemistry Section in order to provide the most efficient and timely forensic analysis of submitted controlled substance evidence. The laboratory will also provide analysis to other types of submitted evidence, such as blood alcohol, ethanol determination, and fire debris analysis. The main goal is to reduce the backlog of evidence in controlled substance cases so that a reduction in the turn-around time from the date of evidence submission to the completion of an analysis report is less than thirty days.
