Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $275,000)

The Fund for the City of New York, Center for Court Innovation will bring its 'trial and error' approach to drug courts to provide state court administrators and drug court practitioners with insight into why some drug courts thrive and some do not. Center staff will conduct an in-depth examination of four states where well-established drug courts were either closed down or experienced significant withdrawal of resources. The Center will document the findings and conduct a mini-roundtable with drug court professionals and statewide administrators to review the research and identify lessons to be learned from these states. The group will attempt to determine the root of the problem in each situation. Center staff will write four state case studies that will provide real-life insight to other states as they seek to institutionalize their drug courts. The Center will then create an Audit Toolkit that will offer strategies to assist state court administrators and individual drug courts to anticipate and address both the 'macro' and 'micro' issues that might negatively impact drug courts and cause them to fail.
