Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Pace Women's Justice Center will support the Bilingual Advocacy Project which seeks to improve the capacity of justice systems in Westchester and Putnam Counties by enhancing their ability to better respond to the needs of the area's traditionally underserved immigrant Latino community. In order to accomplish this goal, funds will be applied towards interpreter and translation services, improved access to social and medical services, and the production of educational materials for Latino victims of domestic violence. The center will rely on existing partnerships with local law enforcement and community organizations that have been trained on the particular needs of Latino victims, and in the establishment of referral processes that empowers victims to access the local justice systems through the project period.
