Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $201,228)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Capital District Women's Bar Association Legal Project, Inc. (CDWBA) will utilize grant funds to support the Domestic Violence and Military Civil Legal Services Project which aims to combat incidents of violence against women and increase public awareness. Through these efforts, CDWBA will: 1) provide technical assistance to civil legal attorneys across the state of New York representing victims of domestic violence involving active duty personnel, veterans, or those partnered with active or veteran service members; 2) provide free civil legal consultations by phone or in-person; and 3) expand their current domestic violence and civil legal services pro bono program, which offers free legal services to victims who are seeking protection in family courts or seeking divorce.
