Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $134,152)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The University of Alabama, School of Law will continue the efforts of the Domestic Violence Law Clinic (the Clinic) to assist victims of domestic violence in West Alabama. The Clinic currently provides free legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The goal is for the Clinic to continue its free legal advocacy, outreach and support, and education efforts for victims of domestic violence living in the seven West Alabama counties of Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa.

The Clinic will allso seek to improve the quantity and quality of legal and outreach services available to victims of domestic violence in West Alabama. They will represent the victim in obtaining protection from abuse orders to protect the victim from violence and provide legal assistance in matters relating to divorce, custody and support, employment and debt issues, housing, property recovery, and public benefits. They will also provide outreach and educational services to inform victims, service providers, judges, law enforcement personnel, and the legal community about domestic violence and the legal rights and remedies available to address this violence.
