Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $212,408)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

LA's BEST (Better Educated Students of Tomorrow) was created to address the rising trends in juvenile crime, drugs, and gang activity throughout the City of Los Angeles. They are enhancing their After School Enrichment Program to support operations at four new sites in Esperanza, Limerick, Pacoima, and Trinity. LA's BEST was created with the mission to provide safe and supervised after school enrichment, education, and recreation activities for children ages 5 to 12 in the City of Los Angeles. This program offers underserved children a safe place to be during the critical after school hours, and it provides motivated role models from their own communities to supervise and inspire them. Elementary students will participate in education, enrichment, and recreation activities that lead to positive attitudes toward school, increased school attendance, increased homework completion rates, and active participation in school and community activities.
