Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) of Oklahoma will enhance their domestic violence and victim programs. With the grant funds the UKB intends to accomplish the following objectives: (1) provide assistance to domestic violence clients with intervention and prevention strategies; (2) coordinate with local and law enforcement agencies; (3) provide training to police officers to better identify, investigate, and track cases; (4) strengthen investigative services for victims of domestic violence and dating violence; (5) develop community-driven initiatives to address violence against women; and (6) develop better collaboration between advocates working with victims of domestic violence, child protective agencies, and criminal justice agencies to provide better support and resources to battered women and their children. These programs serve an estimated 12,000 tribal members.
