The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Lower Makefield Township Police Department, in conjunction with the Bucks County Security Threat Group, will combat gang activity in their community. The Bucks County Security Threat Group is comprised of law enforcement agencies from Bensalem Township, Bristol Township, Morrisville Borough, Lower Makefield Township, Tullytown Borough, and Yardley Borough. They will develop a coordinated five prong approach consisting of information gathering, establishing an anonymous gang tip hotline, increasing uniformed and plainclothes police response, purchasing surveillance technology and equipment, and implementing a training and awareness program for parent and teacher organizations. The Bucks County Security Threat Group Initiative will address the problems of gang criminal activity like minor thefts, weapon offenses, and aggravated assaults.
