The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The State of Kansas Bureau of Investigations will purchase new ballistic protection vests for law enforcement agents. They will implement a vest replacement program to ensure that agents have the appropriate vests while enforcing state and federal laws. The program will ensure that all vests are covered by warranty; as currently, the majority of vests used by KBI agents are older than five years and exceed the industry standard warranty for protective vests. This program will significantly improve the safety of law enforcement agents in the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.
