Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $53,661)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Crossroads Safehouse, Inc. provides free advocacy, legal representation, emergency shelter access, and other services to domestic violence survivors in Larimer County, Colorado. The funds will support a portion of the salary and benefits for two full-time Outreach Center employees. Safehouse Crossroads has significantly increased the number of clients served and client services offered without increasing the number of domestic violence advocates on staff. A full-time domestic violence advocate will meet with individuals and groups to assist via advocacy, counseling, and community referrals. A full-time outreach advocacy assistant will make appointments, greet walk-ins, provide information about Safehouse Crossroads and referrals, and answer the majority of the Outreach Center phone calls. These two full-time employees will help advance the services offered to many survivors of domestic violence and their children.
