Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $212,408)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will support the 2008 Summer Stars Teen Program. The purpose of the program is to provide safe, adult-supervised activities for teenagers who reside in five of Milwaukee's most demanding neighborhoods. It will utilize five centers along with collaborative agencies to deliver the program. MPS will take an active role in enhancing physical activity and promoting healthy choices for Milwaukee teenagers in a controlled and adult supervised environment. The program is a vital factor in the fight against juvenile crimes and illicit behaviors in the Milwaukee area. The program will operate in five regional area MPS community recreation sites. MPS will address three key problems that are confronting Milwaukee teenage youth: 1) lack of secure adult-supervised recreational opportunities; 2) lack of healthy behavior in the teen population; and 3) juvenile crime activity.
