Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $509,779)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Safe and Sound, Inc. will provide continued operational support of their mission to reduce crime in 21 target neighborhoods in the City of Milwaukee. They will enable youth to resist involvement with gangs, drug use, and criminal behavior using a three-pronged strategy: positive youth development activities offered during the high crime afterschool hours, door-to-door community organizing, and neighborhood clean ups. Safe and Sound, Inc. provides safe places located throughout the city that offer positive alternatives to young people ages 10-19. They organize community partners to empower residents to take back their neighborhoods. Safe and Sound Inc. will engage older youth in youth-led crime reduction projects, restorative justice practices such as community conferencing and peace-making circles, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), and other projects while building their leadership and problem solving skills.
