Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Delaware County Community College (DCCC) will expand the DCCC Institute for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (Institute). They will continue to deliver training programs to their target population of police officers, firefighters, and other public safety professionals, while broadening its geographic reach beyond Delaware County and Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Institute assists communities in preventing crime through training programs that promote public safety, emergency preparedness, and effective responses to situations such as terrorist attacks, violent crimes, and manmade and natural disasters that could adversely affect our region. They prepare police officers, firefighters, and other public safety professionals from multiple agencies in multiple jurisdictions throughout the Greater Philadelphia five county region (Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia) to work together and share resources to prevent crime and to respond effectively to terrorist attacks, criminal incidents as well as man made and natural disasters.
