Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $58,133)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The 7th Judicial Circuit District Attorney's (DA) Office will support the Calhoun Cleburne County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force. The goal of the project is to reduce the availability of illegal drugs including marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The Task Force will provide coordinated enforcement techniques to deter and investigate the incidences of violent crime in the counties of Calhoun and Cleburne. The Task Force will accomplish the following objectives: (1) increase the number of arrests for the manufacturing and distribution of controlled substances; (2) increase the number of violent crime investigations; and (3) increase the number of methamphetamine labs seized or intercepted. The 7th Judicial Circuit DA's Office will fund overtime for the law enforcement officers of the Calhoun Cleburne County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.
