Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $849,631)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office will enhance their court security by purchasing additional security equipment and materials, and providing additional training for staff at six of their court complexes. They will install window laminate to enhance the safety and security of some areas by preventing the public from being able to see inside. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office will install a courtroom video activated alarm system so all responding law enforcement will be able to see problems in the courtroom before entering the courtroom, thereby increasing the safety and security of law enforcement. They will train courtroom staff to increase their awareness of potential threats associated with the court and to better prepare security staff to react to those threats. Courtroom staff will participate in the training exercises developed as part of the Emergency Action Plan. This initiative will improve the safety and security of staff at the Washoe County Court complexes.
