Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $84,963)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Community Renewal International, Inc. (CRI) will develop a program for emergency, terrorism, and disaster preparedness through a renewal and restoration process, selecting two of the five high-crime, low-income Internal Care Unit (ICU) neighborhoods in the Shreveport/Bossier City area as pilots. CRI will train residents in the development of the model for a neighborhood-based emergency response plan by the Terrorism and Disaster Center (TDC) at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. They will partner with other organizations to educate and inform these residents on how to respond to and protect themselves from various possible emergency situations.
