Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office will prevent financial exploitation of the elderly. Through the grant, the salaries of staff who will conduct seminars aimed at helping elders avoid exploitation will be supported. In addition, lectures at financial institutions and law enforcement agencies will be scheduled in order to raise awareness and reporting of financial abuse and increase effective investigation methods. Over the past several years, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office has experienced a significant increase in the number of complaints regarding financial crimes against the elderly. It is anticipated that this project will help improve the capacity to investigate and prosecute these cases.
