Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Yonkers City Police Department will enhance the operations of its warrant squad. It is estimated that 10,000 city issued warrants are outstanding, with approximately 20 percent of them involving violent crimes of gun and gang activity, illegal drugs, and sex offenses. Costs supported by the grant will enable the department to assign officers to prioritize and execute warrants while on overtime, provide training with firearms, plain clothes operation, and fugitive apprehension. The Department will also purchase tactical gear aimed at increasing efficiency of operations, as well as the safety of officers and the public.
