Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $254,889)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Montana State University at Billings (MSU Billings) will use the grant funds to develop academic and short-term workforce training programs for women incarcerated at the Montana Women's Prison. Program activities will include mathematics, literacy, job readiness, and career assessment training. MSU Billings will also coordinate with the Billings Workforce Development Center to provide additional support services and to initiate mentoring activities that target women offenders.
