Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $143,096)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Hamilton County Drug Court will establish an Adult Treatment Drug Court to combat drug epidemics while saving the county's resources. The target population is non-violent offenders whose substance abuse is either the cause or related to their criminal activity. A prompt screening will ascertain eligibility and will be followed by an assessment of treatment needs which will determine the level-of-care placement. Upon entry into the program, the participant will begin a three phase multi-dimensional road to recovery. Treatment services are provided for a minimum of 12 months and up to 18 months depending on level of need, severity of addiction, motivation and readiness for treatment. Major components include individual and group counseling, focused vocational, educational and employment services.
