The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget.

Alameda County will fund the Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), which is a broad approach to county-wide violence prevention requiring significant and innovative collaboration across county agencies, cities, law enforcement agencies, schools, businesses, and neighborhoods. Grant funding will be used to identify the structural and strategic innovations necessary to better engage county decision-makers and stakeholders in a unified and cohesive county-wide violence prevention effort.
