Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $380,098)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The City of Atlanta will administer the City Safe Summit: Taking Action Against Illegal Drugs and Guns initiative to reduce drug and gun violence in a targeted area. They will collaborate with law enforcement and criminal justice system leaders from federal, state, county, and local agencies to implement a model pilot project that will provide specialized services for a targeted group of ex-offenders. This initiative will target the large numbers of adult ex-offenders who return to probation or parole; focus specifically on adult ex-offenders whose children are known to the Fulton County Juvenile Court; employ data-driven interdiction and prevention strategies; and involve state agencies, service providers, local neighborhood leaders and community schools, and schools-based outreach.
