The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The City of Nacogdoches Police Department will create a permanent drug interdiction unit, increase aggressive interdiction investigations, and utilize K-9 services by procuring one narcotic/patrol crossed-trained police dog. The department's Drug Interdiction Unit (DIU) will maintain detailed statistics that measure the number of arrests and seizures. They will create a permanent drug interdiction unit. The Nacogdoches Police Department will reduce the availability of illegal narcotics in Nacogdoches through increased, aggressive interdiction investigations. They will enhance information sharing with other law enforcement agencies. The Nacogdoches Police Department will increase public awareness through education and community involvement. This project will address the need for a local narcotics investigative or enforcement unit within the local jurisdiction.
