Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $290,663)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Citizens Committee for New York City (CCNYC) will support the efforts of twenty-one volunteer community groups in New York City working collaboratively to create safer neighborhoods by reducing crime and increasing public safety. The project selected organizations for support based on their crime reduction and prevention strategies, and their proven capabilities to implement effective community policing programs. CCNYC will strengthen their partnerships with participant organizations, local law enforcement, key criminal justice agencies, and other community resources to continue sustainment of long-term reduction of crime in the city.
