Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $313,022)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation will partner with the Greater Kansas City Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to implement enhancements to their crime prevention services. LISC attracts, coordinates, and provides resources to assist in transforming targeted neighborhoods into healthy, sustainable communities in partnership with their residents. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation will provide support for the local Neighborhoods NOW program; a multi-year program that provides a comprehensive approach to redevelopment with the goal of preventing crime and enhancing safety initiatives in targeted areas. The project will support community organizers working in targeted areas to ensure coordinated and collaborative programming are carried out across communities. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation will: provide positive and developmental youth programs; track the number of offenders who re-enter targeted communities; enhance security through the installation of cameras that will be monitored by community residents; and, enhance community-wide block watch programs.
