Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $169,926)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The University of North Dakota (UND), School of Law will support efforts to recruit and retain Native American law students who are enrolled in federal or state recognized tribes. The project will address underrepresentation of Native Americans in the legal profession. UND will: improve and expand scholarships for Native American law students; enhance the mentoring and support programs for Native American students; provide outreach to tribal colleges and other regional universities to attract prospective students; and, support local, regional, and national programs for Native American students and faculty.
