Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $715,479)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Alaska State Troopers will reduce the number of alcohol related occurrences of homicide, assault, sexual assault, suicide, and accidental death in the Western Alaska communities. The Alaska State Troopers will aggressively enforce and prosecute illegal importation and sale of alcohol to reduce its availability. The Alaska State Troopers will also aggressively enforce all local option statutes and all applicable federal statutes related to illegal shipments of alcohol.
