Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $330,886)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Long County Board of Commissioners will acquire the necessary equipment and hire personnel to support the Long County Sheriff's office ability to keep providing proactive law enforcement to the community. The Long County Sheriff's Office will hire personnel to assist with administrative duties; provide vital assistance to the public; and assist officers in obtaining critical information on incidents and suspects. They will also assist in collecting data on incident types, arrests, and is substance abuse was involved. The Long County Sheriff's Office will acquire necessary equipment to keep providing proactive law enforcement to this community, increase patrols, assist citizens in keeping violence down, drugs away from neighborhoods and kids, and stop gangs from entering our community and schools. The Long County Board of Commissioners will also educate youth though their CHAMPS Program. This program teaches youth to stay away from gangs, drugs, and other harmful activities and promote safe, friendly activities.
