Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $212,408)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Rhode Island Family Court will provide supplemental coordinated mental health services for juveniles within the criminal justice system. They will provide comprehensive mental health services to juveniles subject to the Rhode Island Family Court jurisdiction. The Rhode Island Family Court will provide participants with brief, comprehensive mental health assessments that include a psychosocial history, initial diagnostic formulation, brief cognitive and academic achievement screening, risk assessment, review of relevant collateral information and treatment recommendations. They will continue and increase cooperation between the criminal justice and mental health systems and the Department of Children, Youth, and Families to provide services to participants.
