Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Central American Solidarity Association (CASA) of Maryland, Inc. will support its Community Crime Prevention Initiative in the town of Langley Park, located in Prince George's County. CASA is Maryland's largest Latino and immigrant-based service and advocacy organization and the goal of this program is to improve the quality of life for low-income immigrant residents by reducing crime in their neighborhoods. They will use a comprehensive plan to engage community members in positive leadership development and community organizing in order to stamp out gangs and violent crime in the neighborhood. CASA will focus on the immigrant residents in approximately 3,600 apartments owned by a local realty management company, which will support and participate in the CASA anti-crime project.
