Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $335,381)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Township of Upper Darby, Upper Darby Weed and Seed Incorporated will provide support to domestic violence victims. They will assist them in moving safely through the criminal justice system, develop skills, and gain the support necessary to have a productive lifestyle. The goals are to intervene in crisis situations of domestic violence by offering a safe housing to victims through shelters and a motel based program; provide treatment for Upper Darby Township resident victims that includes access to a full scope of services in order to attain a better quality of life; and break the cycle of violence by conducting outreach programs to the residents of Upper Darby Township.
