Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $241,474)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The City of Abilene Police Department will design and equip a new law enforcement training facility that will provide increased classroom space and educational capabilities to meet the training needs of department personnel and surrounding law enforcement agencies. Currently, the department provides basic police academy training at a complex north of Abilene that does not contain adequate space or modern technology to meet current training needs. The new facility will be located within the City of Abilene and will provide trainings that are similar in scope to those being provided at the current facility. The Abilene Police Department will purchase equipment for the proposed larger training facility. A larger and modern-equipped facility will increase the department's capacity to meet the long-term goal of providing quality training for Abilene police officers and other law enforcement officers across the region.
