Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Davidson County Mental Health Court Foundation (DCMHCF) and the Nashville Drug Court Support Foundation (NDCSF) will provide recovery community transitional housing units and comprehensive treatment options to those individuals supervised by the Davidson County Mental Health Court. The project will support offenders who suffer from serious and persistent mental illness, substance abuse, co-occurring disorders, and mental retardation. DCMHCF will assist offenders with living a more stable, sober, and crime-free life within the community. They will: increase public awareness and support of the joint collaboration with participating agencies; educate others across the state and country about efforts and accomplishments; and, encourage other agencies to collaborate in an effort to provide better services. DCMHCF will increase the number of persons served through judicially operated social service diversionary programs. A primary goal is to reduce incarceration times and recidivism rates for offenders suffering from mental illness, co-occurring, and mental retardation disabilities.
