The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Texas State University - San Marcos will provide various school-based trainings in three school districts within the State of Texas. These trainings are part of the university's program titled, Project Protect. The purpose of Project Protect is to provide comprehensive training programs to limit the susceptibility to a violent incident within three designated school districts (San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District, Waco Independent School District, and Fort Worth Independent School District); increase the management capability of any hazardous situation; and increase the safety for children in designated schools.
