Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $254,889)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The University of Nevada - Las Vegas will use the grant funds to support the Nevada Immigrant Resource Project that was created as part of the Immigration Clinic of the Thomas and Mack Legal Clinic at the William S. Boyd School of Law. The project was designed to increase immigrants' and their advocates' access to immigration information through presentations, workshops, and educational materials developed by William S. Boyd School of Law students. The project is also designed to increase the number of quality immigration attorneys by hiring recent graduates interested in immigration law. The project responds to southern Nevada's growing need for immigration-related legal services and information. The Immigration Clinic currently is the only institution providing free general legal representation in immigration matters in southern Nevada. The Nevada Immigrant Resource Project will continue its extensive outreach and education work throughout Nevada and conduct research on immigrant communities in Las Vegas.
