Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,520,392)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, Inc. will continue the Tools for Tolerance® program. Since its inception twelve years ago, the program has successfully developed and delivered professional training programs for well over 137,000 front line service providers, including over 82,000 law enforcement officers and criminal justice professionals. The program complements, supplements, and reinforces the objectives of federal, state, and local efforts to increase law enforcement professionalism, public awareness, and strategic action. The Simon Wiesenthal Center will provide innovative, interactive training for law enforcement professionals, together with their criminal justice and community partners, regarding the prevention of hate crimes and terrorism, ethical decision making, and cultural awareness. All of these skills are important tools for strengthening security while preserving freedom and fostering safe, just, and inclusive communities.
