The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Washington County will address public safety by providing additional security in and around the courthouse. Currently, the Washington County Courthouse and Jail currently have no security systems. The county will implement measures to enhance their overall capability to provide protection to the judges, courtroom personnel, and citizens entering or exiting the courthouse. They will purchase interior and exterior cameras that will allow the county to digitally record all activity inside and outside the building to stop a threat prior to entrance to the building. The facility will also be equipped with interior keypads with door controllers for the Judges Chambers, District Attorney's Office, and Clerk of the Superior Court Office doors. Courtroom and jail security personnel will also be provided with hand held communication equipment. The Washington County will provide a safe and secure environment for courtroom staff and the citizens in and around the courthouse.
