Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $58,133)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The City of Tifton will develop Neighborhood Watch programs in the public housing authorities targeting the Hispanic community. The Tifton Police Department, the Tifton Housing Authority, residents of the Hispanic community, and residents of the Public Housing Authority have formed an alliance to rid the neighborhood of the increase in drug-related crimes, drug sales, juvenile gangs, violence, truancy, damage to property, thefts, and other crimes. Increased police presence in certain areas is needed to help combat crime. The grantee will purchase equipment and train law enforcement personnel in undercover operations to reduce street level drug sales.
