Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Grands As Parents Inc., (GAPS) will provide support services and advocacy for the rights of the heads of families where grandparents have been forced from retirement to become the sole caretakers for their grandchildren. GAPS will implement their Very Important People, (V.I.P.) program which targets the needs of teenagers between the ages of 12-15. The GAPS program will offer dance, drama, art, and computers. The program will also work with teenagers to address self-esteem, anger management, health awareness, employment, and leadership skills.
