Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $447,174)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The American Library Association will educate and protect our nation's children, as well as their parents or guardians, against violence. The project will support the 'All Kids Count' program which produces educational films for children and families on the topics of internet predators, abduction, and targeted school violence. The American Library Association will distribute the educational films to schools and public libraries, the internet, and other free venues. The project supports the concept that children and families who are educated and prepared will enable society to prevent and combat these crimes.
